Making Intimate Connections: Seven Guidelines for Great Relationships and Better Communication (Rebuilding Books)
Published in Paperback by Impact Publishers, Inc. (November, 2000)
Average review score:

Love skillsThis book is unique because it teaches concrete skills that people can use to improve their relationships. The point is that if people are responsible for themselves and their own thoughts and emotions and unilaterally accept others, they will feel happier in their relationships, be more open to improving their own weaknesses with their partner's help, influence their partners positively, and accept their own and their partner's flaws. It's probably most helpful for people who are already in committed relationships but have reached a kind of "standoff" or withdrawal from their partners, but know they still love them and want to re-connect. On the other hand, the 7 basic skills presents in this book would benefit us all and are useful in all types of relationships, from friendship to parent/child and spouse.

Manual of Environmental Microbiology
Published in Hardcover by Amer Society for Microbiology (15 January, 2002)
Average review score:

Wow!!!One word describes this book - wow! This book is a great source of information for everybody that is seriously interested in environmental microbiology. The wealth of information given in this book is divided into 98 "short stories", most of them on average 10 pages long, each written by a different scientist. Even though the book is presented in a very scientific manner, it reads surprisingly easy, although the reader should have some knowledge of microbiology and biochemistry. This is not a textbook! Those of you who are looking for a pretty picture book should look elsewhere. There are no fancy appendices or glossaries, no CD-ROM, just an index. Pictures and graphs are held to a minimum and are used for the more complex concepts only. At the end of each chapter, a bibliography invites to further exploration of the particular topic. Here are the main sections of the book: 1. Introduction to environmental microbiology, 2. General methodology, 3. Water microbiology in public health, 4. Aquatic environments, 5. Soil, Rhizosphere, and Phyllosphere, 6. Subsurface and landfills, 7. Aerobiology, 8. Biotransformation and biodegradation. In conclusion, this book has quality and substance, just as you would expect from a book published by the ASM.

Mariner's Weather
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (May, 1992)
Average review score:

Excellent Handbook for the Mariner.This is truely a gem! For those who are going to sea or those who are weather enthusiasts, this book should be in your library. My wife and I sailed across the Pacific and were helped immensely by Crawford's book. It is well written for both the unfamiliar reader as well as those wanting an in depth understanding of what makes weather happen and what to expect while it's happening. With almost every page having diagrams or photographs, Crawford takes the reader through an explanation of the atmosphere, introducing the reader to the whys and wheres of winds, the role that heat plays in meteorology, discussions of clouds, fogs, ice, and fronts. He discusses weather instruments and weather charts. The book is directed toward the mariner, both professional and cruiser. Though his book is not layed out specifically with generalities first, followed by increased specifics and details, it is not difficult for the reader to get the general gist of what the author is trying to convey, without having to sort through pages of confusing details. At the same time, those who are hungry for the intricacies of meteorlogical phenomina will have a hard time putting the book down: for them it will be like a compelling novel, and their sleep schedule will likely suffer as a result.
I am surprised to find that I am the first to review this fine book, because I regularly give it as a gift, and well received it has been!

Military living's temporary military lodging around the world
Published in Unknown Binding by Military Living Publications ()

This guide is indispensableHousing and travel availability changes almost day to day and it is difficult to write ahead to plan the move. This book and many versions before it have helped make those plans much easer.
The author has seen the in's and out's of travel from a practical stand point. She has written several books on this subject and related subjects including "Military Space-A Air Basic Training: And Reader Trip Reports" and a book that you will have to search to find written about her two years in Vietnam "Customs and Culture of Vietnam" which is very in-depth.

The Mobilian Trade Language
Published in Hardcover by University of Tennessee Press (December, 1983)

forgotten & Ignored American HistoryHaving grown up with a grandfather that still knew some of the language, I was additionally enlightened on reading this book.
The theme of the depth of influence of Eastern woodland Indians on the American sub-culture in South has been severely neglected. So much of what is held to be Anglo or "African" factors seem more & more to be native. Food, words, family residential & migration patterns, attutudes of self-preservation & family loyalities all seem to be in part drawn form our mixed-blood heritage. Even with those who are unaware of it.
excellent book.

My First Christmas Touch and Feel (My First series)
Published in Hardcover by Dorling Kindersley Publishing (01 September, 2002)
Average review score:

Great Book for toddlers!I really like this book. It has so many different textures as well as common secular Christmas things (Santa, reindeer, stockings, angels, ornaments, cookies, presents, candy canes, tree, etc...). The textures are truly unique (sticky, furry, bumpy, rough, velvet, satiny, etc...), plus you have all the different words. There is a new texture on about every page. All of the books in this series are great! I thought the price was a little high for this one, but my girls were 18 months at Christmas and really were into touch and feel books. They still love it, even though it is March!! This is a very secular Christmas book, but it is fun. We have many other books about Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas that can be found in Christian book stores, but this was just a fun touch and feel book for that time of year. I think it was worth the money.
The need for Christian believers to comprehend sin in their own lives through God's eyes, using Scripture as the standard of human conduct, as opposed to a societally imposed standard;
The effects of sin in the lives of believers, in terms of both eternal and temporal consequences;
An understanding of repentance as both a point and a process, turning from sin and making a way back 'home' to God's path;
The need to have an appropriate fear of God, as the Lord of the Universe, and an understanding of what that ought to mean in daily life;
The need for the church, as the Body of Christ, to be a vehicle to help believers to come to grips with their sin and work through the process of repentance, as opposed to mitigating the sinnner's understanding of the stain that sin is on their lives.
This is a fine book, well worth reading and re-reading.
